Purple-hued Tequila bell peppers grow on a small-statured, yet productive plant. The blocky bell peppers can grow to be four and a half inches tall and four inches across, and are generally four lobed. Tequila bell peppers ripen from green to lilac purple and as they mature, they become orange with occasional purple stripes and eventually turning a bright red. Tequila bell peppers are harvested when they are still purple, though home gardeners may opt to leave them on the plant to fully ripen. The vibrantly colored skin of the Tequila bell pepper covers a thick, ivory flesh. Tequila bell peppers are sweet and have a crisp, juicy texture. Tequila bell peppers do not contain any capsaicin, the compound responsible for the spice level of a pepper.
Sweet Purple Tequila peppers are available in the late summer.
Tequila bell peppers are a colorful, sweet, hybrid cultivar of Capsicum annuum, the botanical classification that includes both sweet and hot peppers. The Tequila bell pepper should not be confused with the hotter, tequila sunrise chile pepper, which is long and orange. Bell peppers are a member of the nightshade family, along with eggplant and tomatoes.
Tequila bell peppers, like all sweet members of Capsicum annuum contain large amounts of vitamins A and C. Bell peppers are also a good source of fiber, and contain iron and a nominal amount of calcium.
Tequila bell peppers add color to salads and crudité platters. Rinse peppers in cool water and remove the stem, seeds and ribs. Sliced rings of Tequila bell peppers can be added to pizzas and green salads, or slice and sauté with onions to top sausages or steaks. Tequila bell peppers can be stuffed and baked, or grilled. Keep unwashed Tequila bell peppers in the refrigerator, in a plastic bag, for up to a week. Bell peppers can also be prepared and sliced and then frozen for later use.
Tequila bell peppers won the 42nd Mississippi Medallion award from the Mississippi Nursery & Landscape Association in 2007. This award is given to three selections a year that have been proven to grow well in the state, after thorough testing done at sites in the state.
Bell peppers are native to both Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean and have been cultivated for over 5,000 years. After visiting the New World, Christopher Columbus brought peppers back with him to Europe, thinking they were related to the well-known spice, black pepper, or Piper nigrum. This act of misidentification led to the two different species sharing a common name. Tequila bell peppers were developed to resist the tobacco mosaic, a virus that often kills bell pepper plants. They were developed in Holland, and are a hybrid. Tequila bell peppers can typically be found at local farmer’s markets or by seed for home gardens.
