There are thousands of different known varieties of Asian pears that can be divided into two main groups. The Shinko Asian pear is of the Japanese variety group, which have round fruits and somewhat similar to an apple in size and shape versus the Chinese varieties which produce fruit that are pear-shaped like European pear varieties. It is a hybrid of the Ussuri pear and the Japanese sand pear. The Asian pear, unlike European pear varieties, need to be tree ripen to reach peak flavor.
