The Purple mangosteen, botanical name Garcinia magostana, simply referred to as mangosteen, is an ultra-tropical slow growing evergreen tree that is cultivated for its edible fruit.

Purple carrots are given their purple colour by anthocyanin, a powerful antioxidant that also gives blueberries and red grapes their colour.

They can trace their origins back to the Middle East region of what is modern day Afghanistan. Originally used as a clothing dye by Afghan royalty, the Purple carrot is now being investigated as a potential source of food colorings.
