Current Facts
Oats, Avena sativa, were first brought to North America with other grains in 1602 and planted on the Elizabeth Islands off the coast of Massachusetts. Once a popular crop for livestock feed, oats have grown in popularity in the medical community for its role in reducing blood cholesterol. Since 1963, studies have shown that consuming 3 grams of soluble oat fiber per day can lower total cholesterol by 8-23%.
