Mini Chocolate bell pepper plants produce a lot of diminutive, milk chocolate-colored sweet peppers. Mini Chocolate bell peppers are three lobed and grow up to two and a half inches tall and 1 and a half inches wide. The small peppers mature from green to their signature cocoa color and can be harvested from the plant at any stage, though the fully ripe, mature rust-colored peppers are the sweetest. The walls of the peppers are thick and there are few seeds within the cavity. The taste is sweet and the texture is crunchy and crisp.
Mini Chocolate bell peppers are available in the mid-summer and through the fall.
Mini Chocolate bell peppers are an heirloom variety of Capsicum annuum whose seeds were passed down through the generations in one Ohio family. These richly colored mini peppers are often included in mixed pepper assortments and have been marketed as “Yum-Yum” peppers by some farmers, or merely as "mini bell peppers." The peppers pictured above were grown by Weiser Family Farm in Southern California.
Mini Chocolate bell peppers are rich in vitamins C, A and B6, as well as other beneficial vitamins. They contain large amounts of folate and fiber. Bell peppers are a good source of antioxidants including healthy carotenoids (like beta-carotene for healthy eyes) and flavonoids, which have powerful anti-inflammatory benefits.
Mini Chocolate bell peppers are a perfect size for stuffing or pickling, and in some cases, both. The small size of the Mini Chocolate bell peppers makes them ideal for a fresh snack, for kabobs or salads. Mini Chocolate bell peppers can be stuffed with cheese, rice, ground meat, and vegetables. Slice the small peppers and top salads or pizzas. Add Mini Chocolate bell peppers to quiches or omelets. Mini Chocolate bell peppers will keep up to a week when wrapped loosely in plastic and kept refrigerated.
A popular recipe from the original seed holder calls for stuffing the Mini Chocolate bell peppers with cabbage and then pickling and canning the peppers. The recipe is a traditional one in the Midwestern United States.
The seeds for Mini Chocolate bell peppers were originally given to Seed Saver’s Exchange in 1981 by Lucina Cress, who had received them from an elderly friend in Ohio. In order to be considered an heirloom, a plant must be more than 100 years old. The heirloom Mini Chocolate bell peppers had been grown by an Ohio family for a few generations before making their way to the public via Seed Saver’s. Through this seed repository, farmers and home gardeners have access to this heirloom variety. Mini Chocolate bell peppers aren’t commercially cultivated, but can be found through small farmers at local farmer’s markets.
