The Jaune Flamme is a small round tomato, roughly the size of a golf ball, weighing an average of three ounces. It has thick yellowish-orange skin, with a rich and meaty interior flesh that is mottled with red streaks. Its flavor is citrusy and fruity when raw, and is further intensified when the tomato is roasted or slowly dried. The disease and crack resistant Jaune Flamme tomato plant is an early and prolific producer, yielding ample crops of the persimmon-colored fruits on elongated trusses. With their vibrant coloring, Jaune Flamme tomatoes appear to glow on the vine against the backdrop of the plant’s dark green foliage. It is an indeterminate, or vining, plant that will continue to grow, set fruit, and ripen throughout the growing season, and it can reach an average of five to six feet, which is why it is often recommended for staking or caging.
The Jaune Flamme tomato is available in the summer and fall.
Tomatoes are botanically referred to as Solanum lycopersicum, formerly Lycopersicon esculentum, and like the potato and eggplant, the tomato is a member of the nightshade family. The Jaune Flamme tomato is an heirloom variety, hence it is open-pollinated and its seed will grow true to its parent. Although all heirloom cultivars are open-pollinated, not all open-pollinated cultivars are heirlooms.
Tomatoes contain a considerable amount of calcium and Vitamin K, both of which are essential in strengthening and repairing bones as well as bone tissue. The vitamin A in tomatoes is beneficial for your hair, eyes, skin, bones, and teeth, and the vitamin B and potassium in tomatoes are effective in reducing cholesterol levels and lowering blood pressure. Tomatoes are most widely known for their outstanding antioxidant content, including their often-rich concentration of lycopene, which has been linked in several studies with the prevention of certain types of cancer.
The Jaune Flamme tomato is known as a drying tomato because, whether dried or even roasted, the slices retain their deep orange color and rich flavor. They are citrusy and fruity when raw and can be used fresh for snacking or in salads, and their flavor only intensifies when the tomato is roasted or slowly dried. This is also a great variety for making a zesty, tasty tomato sauce. Store your tomatoes at room temperature until fully ripe, after which refrigeration may be used to prevent further ripening and slow the process of decay.
The Jaune Flamme, often known simply as Flamme, is an old heirloom variety native to France. Its name is French for “Yellow Flame”, alluding to the variety’s rich golden-apricot complexion.
The Jaune Flamme tomato originated with Norbert Perreira of Helliner, France. It was believed to have been made commercially available by Tomato Growers Supply Company in 1997. The Jaune Flamme will grow well in most regions of the United States, notably in California, and is said to fare better than most other heirloom cultivars in areas with cooler nights.
