Indigo Blue Berries cherry tomatoes are small fruits, just one or two ounces in size, with stunning deep purple skin, indicative of their rich anthocyanin content, and reddish-brown flesh. The unripe fruit is amethyst colored, but as the fruit ripens it turns crimson red in areas where it was shaded while the areas exposed to sunlight turn a shade of purple so dark it almost looks black. Their flavor is extremely fruity and sweet, similar to a plum. The open-pollinated, indeterminate Indigo Blue Berries cherry tomato plants are very productive, yielding elongated clusters of the half-inch sized fruit all season. This variety is sunburn and crack resistant, disease tolerant, and has a great vine and shelf life.
Indigo Blue Berries cherry tomatoes are available in the summer months.
Indigo Blue Berries cherry tomatoes are also known as Blue Boar Berries. Tomatoes, originally termed Solanum lycopersicum, are botanically referred to as Lycopersicon esculentum, although modern studies are encouraging a return to the original classification. Tomatoes are categorized in subgroups that represent variations observed within the tomato species, referred to as their cultivar: a botanical term that is a contraction of the two-word term cultivated variety, and is equivalent to what growers simply call a “variety.” Therefore, cherry tomato varieties, such as Indigo Blue Berries cherry tomatoes, are more specifically called Lycopersicon esculentum var. cerasiforme.
Indigo Blue Berries cherry tomatoes contain high levels of anthocyanin, a naturally occurring antioxidant also found in blueberries, that is professedly helpful at combating disease, and is expressed in the dark blue-purple complexion of the fruit. Tomatoes are a good source of calcium and iron. They contain decent amounts of phosphorus, sulfur, and potassium, and they are also rich in vitamins A, B and C.
Indigo Blue Berries cherry tomatoes are flavorful and sweet, so they are most often eaten raw. Cherry tomatoes come in a variety of colors, which make them great for use in salads, either on their own or atop greens. In addition, cherry tomatoes can be used raw to garnish cooked pasta dishes along with fresh basil, or as a colorful addition to summertime side dishes. Store tomatoes at room temperature away from direct sunlight until ready to use. Refrigerate only extra-ripe tomatoes to keep them from ripening any further.
Blue tomatoes like the Indigo Blue Berries cherry tomato have been purposely bred to yield high levels of anthocyanin, the pigment responsible for the blue and purple coloring of many fruit, which contains antioxidant properties.
The Indigo Blue Berries cherry tomato is an open-pollinated cultivar developed by Brad Gates of Wild Boar Farms and introduced around 2015. Indigo Blue Berries cherry tomatoes have been reported to do well in USDA hardiness zones three through eleven. Tomatoes are warm-season plants and they cannot survive a frost, so it is crucial that they be planted only after the danger of frost is no longer present.
