Applications
Black seedless grapes make delicious jam, jelly and fine wine. Add to fruit salads. Make a topping for tarts or cheesecake. Serve as an edible accompaniment for white meat or fish entrees. For a dessert sauce, combine black seedless grapes, a slice of ginger root, a splash of lemon juice and finely grated lemon peel, a stick of cinnamon, honey to taste and one-half cup of water. Bring to a boil. Stir one teaspoon of cornstarch into a small amount of cold water; add to mixture and cook until thickened. Remove cinnamon stick; serve warm or chilled with angel food or pound cake, vanilla ice cream or over a mixture of fruit. To store, wrap in perforated plastic; refrigerate. For optimum quality, enjoy grapes promptly after purchase.
Geography/History
Requiring cold conditions for a dormant period, black seedless grapes flourish in the spring when the climate warms to 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Produced in California, the fertile San Joaquin Valley provides this grape's optimum growing conditions. Black seedless grapes were introduced into the United States in the 1800s.
