Seasons/Availability
Apple mint is typically available in summer.
Current Facts
Apple mint is a perennial plant member of the genus, Mentha grown as both a culinary herb and an ornamental plant for ground cover.
Description/Taste
Apple mint, AKA wooly mint, is grown for its aromatic and uniquely colored leaves. Its green leaves are slightly furred and wrinkled with white and cream blushed tips. It imparts sweet and fruity flavors, although it has less mint flavor compared to other culinary mint varieties.
Applications
As apple mint has slight flavor and looses the little flavor it has when cooked, its best reserved for a garnish for both sweet and savory dishes. Although apple mint jelly is a popular canning idea, it is actually made with apples and common mint.
Ethnic/Cultural Info
Apple mint has been cultivated primarily for medicinal purposes for thousands of years in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas.
Geography/History
All mints are fast growing, prefer, and thrive in cool, moist spots in partial shade within temperate climates. Mints tolerate a wide range of conditions, though, including full sun.
