The Gold Nugget tangerine has a rounded shape that is flattened at both ends, and a rough, deeply-pebbled texture. It’s a medium-sized variety, averaging 8 centimeters in diameter. Its golden-orange skin is aromatic and moderately easy to peel. It’s tender, easily-segmented flesh is deep orange in color, juicy, and usually seedless. The Gold Nugget tangerine offers a sweet flavor with mild acidity.
Gold Nugget tangerines are available in mid-winter through spring months.
The Gold Nugget tangerine, botanically classified as Citrus reticulata, is well known as a late season variety, and is named for its appearance. The Gold Nugget is a mandarin hybrid, a cross between two non-commercial breeding varieties, the wilking and kincy mandarins.
Gold Nugget tangerines are high in vitamin C, folate, and dietary fiber. They also contain vitamin A, calcium, potassium, and antioxidants.
Gold Nugget tangerines are most commonly eaten fresh. Add peeled and segmented Gold Nugget tangerines to salads, fruit tarts, and desserts, or juice for cocktails and other beverages or smoothies. Pair Gold Nugget tangerines with dried or fresh berries, shallots, olive oil, citrus, fennel, and fresh herbs, and serve with seafood, pork or chicken. Gold Nugget tangerines will keep refrigerated for up to two weeks.
Tangerine consumption in the United States has doubled since the 1990s, with the bulk of production transitioning from Florida to California. Today, California accounts for more than 90% of tangerine production in the US.
The Gold Nugget tangerine was developed at the University of California, Riverside in the 1950s, but was not released until 1975 when a disease-resistant budwood had been established. They can be found at farmers markets and specialty retail stores, and are especially prevalent in Southern California.
