Splendor apples are medium to large in size and are conical in shape with faint ribbing. The thick skin has a green to yellow base with bright red and dull red blushing. There are also many light green lenticels or pores covering the surface, and some russeting may also be present. The medium to fine-grained flesh is pale yellow to light green and is crisp and firm. There are also a few, dark brown seeds encased in the central fibrous core. Splendor apples are juicy and sweet with little acidity.
Splendor apples are available in the late fall.
Splendor apples, botanically classified as Malus domestica, are an heirloom variety that was created in New Zealand and are most well-known as a dessert apple. Also known as Splendour or Starksplendor, Splendor apples are believed to be a mix between the red dougherty and golden delicious apple, though no genetic evidence has proven the exact parentage. Splendor apples store well and are popular for fresh eating, but because their skin bruises easily, they are not produced on a wide commercial scale.
Splendor apples contain polyphenols, vitamins C, K, and B6, and minerals such as potassium, copper, manganese, and magnesium.
Splendor apples are best suited for raw applications as they are considered a sweet dessert apple for fresh eating. They can be sliced and served as a healthy snack or mixed into green salads, salsas, and fruit salads. Splendor apples can also be baked in pies, tarts, cakes, muffins, cobblers, and cookies. They are also pressed and used to make cider. Splendor apples pair well with a grounding accompaniment such as nuts, seeds, or nut butter. They will keep up to three months when stored in the refrigerator.
European settlers first introduced apples and pears to New Zealand in 1819. New Zealand has led the way in apple cultivation with some of the highest apple yields in the world and the development of popular varieties such as royal gala, braeburn, and jazz apples. New Zealand has a diverse environment that provides warmth and sunshine mixed with winter frosts which can nurture and help stimulate the production of apples such as the Splendor.
Splendor apples were first created in Napier, New Zealand in 1948. They were bred for commercial use and released to the market in 1967. Though they were intended for commercial use, their popularity declined because their easily bruised skin made them unfit for shipping. Today Splendor apples can be found at specialty markets in New Zealand and on select online seed catalogs.
