The French Breakfast radish can be recognized by its oblong shape and its red to white cascading shades of color. The top of the French Breakfast radish starts bright red and changes to a bright white a the tip. Ranging from 3 to 4 inches in length, the French Breakfast radish has a crisp consistency and offers a mildly spicy flavor.
French Breakfast radish is available year-round with a peak season in the winter and spring months.
Radishes are a good source of vitamin C. Low in calories, one cup of radishes contain about 20 calories. Eating five daily servings of fruits and vegetables lowers the chances of cancer. A recent study found that eating nine or ten daily servings of fruits and vegetables, combined with three servings of low-fat dairy products, were effective in lowering blood pressure.
Considered a gorgeously gourmet radish, it most definitely is not typically eaten at breakfast with coffee or tea, but this unique baby radish is excellent grated or sliced on salads, soups and stir-fries. Try a radish sandwich. Simply arrange radish slices between buttered slices of a favorite bread. Pair with a variety of steamed root vegetables for a snappy side dish. Brighten veggie trays with its aesthetic good looks; serve with dip or dressing. To store, clip off greens; wrap radishes in plastic. Refrigerate for up to one week. The edible greens may be boiled and added to salads.
