Bartlett pears have a “true” pear (or pyriform) shape and blushy yellow color. The fruit’s color brightens as it ripens, which is a characteristic unique to Bartlett pears; most pears do not change color when ripe. At harvest they are a vibrant green, changing to yellow when ready to eat. When unripe, the texture can be gritty. The Bartlett pear has a distinct flavor and sweetness, its white flesh has a smooth, buttery texture.
Bartlett pears may be found year-round, with peak season in fall and winter.
Bartlett pears pear are a variety of the botanically classification, Pyrus communis and a member of the rose, or Rosaceae family. They are one of the most popular varieties of European pears in the United States and are usually the first of the pears harvested during the fall season. Like an avocado, they are picked when firm and later ripened off the tree in a cold storage room.
