Peach blossoms may vary in color depending on its variety. Most peach blossoms have pale pink petals with deep magenta or hot pink blushing near its center. Each blossom consists of five petals with several, stringy stamens toward its center. They are approximately 2-3 centimeters in diameter. Peach blossoms have a soft, delicate texture with a sweet aroma that is reminiscent of honey and almond. The flavor of Peach blossoms is mild with a nectar-like sweetness.
Peach blossoms are available during the early spring months.
Peach blossoms are produced by the deciduous tree botanically classified as Prunus persica. As member of the Rose family, relatives include plums, cherries, peaches, apricots and almonds. There are hundreds of varieties of peaches, all belonging to two categories- the freestones and the clingstones. Regardless of the cultivar, all Peach blossoms are virtually identical. The Peach blossom is the Delaware state flower.
Peach blossoms are best used as an edible garnish as they offer only a mildly sweet flavor. Use the flowers to add color to both sweet and savory dishes. Their naturally sweet flavor can complement fruits like lemon, pear, apricot and quince, or other edible aromatic flowers such as rose, jasmine, and elderflower. Peach blossoms may be steeped as a tea, made into jelly or aged in vodka for an aromatic cordial. Pluck the petals from the base of the flower because the rest of the flower can be rather tough.
In China, the peach tree holds mystical properties thought to bring good luck, abundance, protection, fertility and affection. In Japan and China it is customary for brides to carry peach blossoms in her bouquet.
Peach trees are native to China and have been cultivated there for over 2500 years. They came to Greece in 300 BC by way of Persia, hence the source for the Peach’s species name Prunus persica. The peach tree made its way to the US via French and Spanish explorers in the 1500s. California is the largest producer of peach blossoms in the US, ahead of South Carolina and Georgia.
