The Deglet Noor is a medium sized date with a narrow elongated oval shape. They range in color from straw yellow to amber toned with a slightly translucent exterior. Their texture is considered semi-dry and often described as having a slight snappy crunch. Compared to the Medjool, they have less sugar but offer a complex sweetness with a nutty finish likened to browned butter and cashew.
Deglet Noor dates are available late summer and fall.
Deglet Noor dates are from the date palm known botanically as Phoenix dactylifera. Of the three classifications of dates; dry, semi-dry and soft, Deglet Noor are of the semi-dry type. They are slightly crunchy yet still pliable and considered the most popular date in the United States.
Deglet Noor dates are a rich source of fiber, iron, potassium, B-vitamins, flavonoids and antioxidants.
Deglet Noor dates are the supreme baking variety due to their modest sweetness and firm consistency. They are easily chopped and diced without becoming mushy and keep a slight bite in bread, cookies and cakes. They are also the preferred variety for the manufacture of date sugar, an alternative sweetener. Complimentary flavors include nuts, chocolate, coffee, cream, maple syrup, cinnamon, coconut, orange, bananas, apricots, brandy, rum, cheese and bacon, pork and poultry.
Deglet Noor means "Date of Light" in Arabic.
The Deglet Noor date is originally from Algeria, and has been cultivated in California for over one hundred years. An overwhelming majority of the date crops in California (some reports suggest almost 95%) are Degelt Noor. The second most popular date is the Medjool. On average, 41 million pounds of Deglet Noor dates are produced annually in California alone.
