Perfection tangerines are small and round to slightly flattened in shape. The small to medium-sized fruits measure between 4 and 6 centimeters in diameter. Their rinds are orange to dark orange with a textured, leathery surface with a small, wrinkled neck like a satsuma. The bright orange flesh is extremely juicy and offers a rich, sweet flavor. Perfection tangerines are bred to be seedless, however there are occasionally a few seeds.
Perfection tangerines are available on a limited basis from late winter to early spring.
Perfection tangerines are a rare variety of mandarin that was never released to the public. The hybrid variety was developed by the University of Riverside Citrus Breeding program and is botanically classified as Citrus reticulata. They are only grown in one place. Polito Farms in northern San Diego County participated in a test study and the few trees they planted via the University still grow and produce the commercially unreleased tangerine today.
Perfection tangerines are an excellent source of vitamin C and folate, as well as a high amount of dietary fiber. They are also a good source of vitamin A, potassium, and calcium. The mandarin orange variety also contains antioxidants in the form of beta-carotene and beneficial flavonoids.
Perfection tangerines has an ideal balance of acidity and sweetness, ideal for both fresh and cooked preparations. Add whole segments to cakes and salads, or juice for frozen desserts, cocktails, marinades or vinaigrettes. Pair fresh segments with olives, honey, peppery greens, avocado, citrus and seafood. Use Perfection tangerine pulp, zest and juice in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine. Perfection tangerines will keep at room temperature for up to a week and refrigerated for up to 2 weeks.
Perfection tangerines are grown by the Polito Family in Valley Center, California. The farm was founded in 1968 and has an extension in Pauma Valley. Now run by the second generation, the farm also grows tangos, tangelos, clementines, tom’s terrific, and gold nugget tangerines.
Perfection tangerines were developed by the Citrus Variety Collection at the University of California at Riverside sometime in the early 2000s. Their parentage is unknown though they are likely a tangerine hybrid. Perfection tangerines grow in the coastal citrus growing region of Southern California, where many citrus varieties flourish. They are most likely spotted at the Santa Monica or San Diego Farmer’s Markets or wherever you may find Polito Family Farms produce.
