Description/Taste
Lucy™Glo apples are medium to large fruits, averaging 7 to 10 centimeters in diameter, and have a round to conical shape. The skin is smooth, slightly bumpy, thin, and yellow with pale green undertones, occasionally covered in lenticels and flushed with pale red blush. Depending on the individual fruit, the red-pigmented flesh can also be seen through parts of the thin skin, creating a multi-colored appearance. Underneath the surface, the flesh is marbled with red, pink, and white hues and has an aques, semi-granular, and crisp, snap-like consistency, encasing a central core filled with tiny, black-brown seeds. Lucy™Glo apples have an initially tart, berry-like flavor balanced with a candy-sweet, tangy finish.
Seasons/Availability
Lucy™Glo apples are available in limited quantities in the fall through winter.
Current Facts
Lucy™Glo apples, botanically classified as Malus domestica, are a unique hybrid variety belonging to the Rosaceae family. The relatively new apple was released in the fall of 2018 and was named for its “glowing” appearance, as the pigmented flesh n be seen through thin parts of the skin, giving the surface a faint, rosy coloring. Lucy™Glo apples are also favored for their sweet-tart taste, marbled flesh, and crisp consistency, which was inherited from the honeycrisp, one of the cultivar's pare varieties. In present-day markets, Lucy™Glo apples are still relatively rare, commercially grown on a small scale, but the variety is predicted to increase in availability as production expands.
Nutritional Value
Lucy™Glo apples are a good source of dietary fiber to regulate the digestive tract and provide high levels of vitamins A and C, antioxidants that strengthen the immune system and reduce inflammation. The apples also contain lower amounts of potassium, iron, and calcium, and the red pigments in the flesh have anthocyanins, which contribute antioxidant-like properties to protect the body against environmental aggressors.
Applications
Lucy™Glo apples are well-suited for both raw and cooked applications, including baking, simmering, and roasting. The apples can be eaten straight, out-of-hand, and the pigmented flesh does not oxidize as quickly as other apple varieties when sliced, ming it a colorful addition to salads, appetizer plates, and grain bowls. Lucy™Glo apples can also be sliced and layered onto sandwiches, wraps, and nut butter toast, blended into juices, ciders, and smoothies, or used as a fresh topping over waffles. yond fresh preparations, Lucy™Glo apples retain their bright red color, even when heated, and are popularly incorporated into pies, tarts, cornbread, cakes, and other baked goods. They are also pureed into apple sauce, poached as a sweet dessert, drieinto chips, or roasted and served with meats as a sweet and savory combination. Lucy™Glo apples pair well with nuts such as walnuts, pistachios, and almonds, dark chocolate, vanilla, maple syrup, cheeses such as cheddar, manchego, and feta, Greek yogu, and spices such a nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves. Whole, unsliced Lucy™Glo apples will keep 2 to 4 weeks when stored in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator.

Geography/History
Lucy™Glo apples were developed in Washington State by breeder Bill Howell in Prosser, Washington. Howell spent most of his career as a research technologist at Washington State University and later began managing an association of commercial nurseries known as Northwest Nursery Improvement Institute. During his career, Howell spent over twenty years crossing red-fleshed apple varieties with other cultivars to create a red-fleshed apple with good eating qualities. Howell eventually decided on using hcrisp apples as one of the main parents, and in 2009, the first Lucy™Glo apples were successfully grown. Lucy™Glo apples were later trademarked and marketed in 2018, mainly sent as samples to distributors, and in 2019 they were introduced to commercl markets through Chelan Fresh, a fruit marketing company. Today Lucy™Glo apples are available through specialty grocers and select supermarkets across the United States.
