Shaped like a teardrop and resembling a tiny pear, these mildly flavored tomatoes are about one to two inches long and about one inch in diameter. A vibrant yellow and slightly lemony in taste, growing conditions and location affect their flavor.
Nutritional Value
High in vitamin A and vitamin C, tomatoes are cholesterol-free and low in calories plus contain potassium, folate and dietary fiber.
Applications
Especially excellent as a colorful edible garnish, these small tomatoes are perfect in salads and stir-fries. Add the last minute of cooking to just heat through to protect their delicate texture. Slice in half, place on crackers, and top with cheese and fresh sweet basil. Always serve tomatoes at room temperature for best flavor.
Geography/History
In 1812, the Creoles in New Orleans included the tomato in their cuisine but it took another fifty years before other skeptical parts of the United States were brave enough to give the suspicious tomato a culinary chance.
