Orange Honeydew Melon
Oval-to-round and a delicious cross between a cantaloupe and a honeydew, the very fleshy juicy orangish-yellow pulp of the orange honeydew melon is encased in a hard very yellow matching rind.
Mache
Mache has been cultivated in France since the 17th century, and in France it is known as doucette. It is also known as "lamb's lettuce" because its leaves resemble the size and shape of a lamb's tongue.
Seasons/Availability
Wild strawberries are available spring and summer. You can sometimes find wild strawberries at your local farmers markets.
Description/Taste
Heart-shaped and varying in size and color, wild strawberries are about the size of a raspberry. Looking just like miniature versions of common strawberries, this tiny replica is much smaller and sweeter than the standard strawberry.
Nutritional Value
Offering some fiber and an excellent source of vitamin C, strawberries, as well as other berries, are said to be cleansing agents for the bladder and colon. Strawberries are excellent for the skin and help prevent tartar.
Applications
Fully ripe wild strawberries are very sweet and most often left fresh and whole. Add to layers of whipped cream, and pound cake in a trifle. Top fresh fruit tarts with whole berries. Add to ice cream custard and freeze. Add wild strawberries to scone dough or muffin batter. Cook down whole berries with sugar and lemon juice to make preserves. To store, keep in container or lie separately between paper towels; refrigerate. Very perishable, do not store these fragile berries longer than two days.
Geography/History
Indigenous to both the Old and the New Worlds, wild strawberries, Fragaria vesca, are native to Europe and were the earliest strawberries cultivated. Preferring dry grassy places, wild strawberries love limey soils. Growing in Europe's conifer forests, the tiny and fragile wild Alpine strawberry was called "fraises des bois", meaning "strawberry of the woods". This minute strawberry of northern Europe was popular in white forms as well as red.
