The very aromatic Valencia Pride mango is well-suited for fresh eating, as well as a flavorful addition to desserts, tarts, ice creams, or salads. Mangoes contain a pit in the center. To remove the pit or stone within the mango, slice away large pieces of mango, cutting close to the stone. Mango is commonly cubed or cut into small bite-sized pieces or slices. Puree the flesh and use to make smoothies, ice cream, or sorbet. Store unripened Valencia Pride mangoes at room temperature for up to ten days until ripe. Ripe mangoes can be kept in the refrigerator for up to a week.
Valencia Pride mangoes are a descendant of an Indian variety known as Mulgoba, which is also the parent variety of the Keitt mango. The Indian varieties of mango are monoembryonic, meaning there is one seed within the stone. Another category of mangoes descended from a Philippine-type, which is polyembryonic, containing two seeds within the center stone. This small detail is the only way to determine to which type an individual mango belongs.
The Valencia Pride mango is a Florida variety first introduced in 1941. The variety is a descendant of the original Haden seedling; a grafted variety from India was brought to Florida by Capt. John J. Haden of Coconut Grove, Florida. He cultivated the first mangoes in 1902. Valencia Pride mangoes are found growing in temperate and tropical climates. In the United States, they are grown in Florida and Southern California. Mangoes date back to ancient times, as far back as the 4th and 5th centuries AD. Seeds of this tropical evergreen tree spread around the tropical world via explorers and sailors. It was the Portuguese in the 15th century who first began the mango trade out of India.
