As with many fruits and vegetables that evolved out of the last decades of the 1900's, the Campari tomato had a branding effort from the beginning to distinguish it from the dilluted pool of tomatoes available. Campari was immediately branded the "tomato lovers tomato", a line so convincing that within the first few years of its debut, it was a supermarket favorite.
Campari tomatoes are classified as a cocktail tomato, a little bigger than a cherry and definitely smaller than a common tomato. They are highly regarded for their juiciness, high sugar level, low acidity, complex flavor and superior texture.
The Campari tomato experienced its biggest taste of fame with an appearance on "The Sopranos" in 2002. This actually boosted its relevancy and perhaps its level of respect within the Italian American community. The following year, the Campari tomato had recorded over a 50% increase in sales. With competition from over 6,000 tomato varieties, product placement can surely be a marketing assist.
The Campari was developed in Europe by a Dutch seed company. The tomato is now trademarked and owned under the Mastronardi Produce Company of Ontario, Canada. Although Campari tomatoes account for just 2 percent of total U.S. tomato sales, that is a relatively high number for one single variety (considering there are 6,000 known tomato varieties).
