Cantaloupe Melon
The cantaloupe is defined by two elements: its roughly netted stone and green colored skin and its aromatic orange-coral colored flesh. When perfectly ripe, the flesh is juicy, unctuous and sweet.

Description/Taste
Sour cherries are bitter-sweet in flavor. Although a tad acidic, these little red to burgundy colored edibles aren't actually mouth-puckering like their name sounds. Palatable, sour cherries do offer a tasty tang.
Applications
Because of their rather intense taste, sour cherries are used primarily to make pie. Ideal for dessert sauces, relish and compotes. Cooking actually enhances its flavor. Pair with pork and duck dishes. To store, keep refrigerated.

There is a westward jog on New York's Broadway and East 10th Street intersection because a cherry tree once stood there. Flowering cherry trees that are around the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C. were a gift from Tokyo's Mayor in 1910. Sour cherries are paired with meat in many cuisines from England to Persia and the Caucasus. In northern Europe, a favorite cherry soup cherished there is made from sour cherries.
Geography/History
Native to western Asia, cultivated cherries are the descendants of two wild species, Prunus avium, ancestor of sweet cherries and Prunus cerasus, ancestor of sour cherries. In the B.C. era, both sweet and sour cherries were cultivated in the Mediterranean region. The name "cherry" is derived from the classical Greek name "kerasos". During the first century A.D., Pliny the Elder wrote that eight cherry varieties were cultivated in Italy and were growing as far as Britain. When the fall of the Roman Empire occurred, for some reason cherry cultivation sharply declined. It wasn't until the early seventeenth century in England that cherry production was rediscovered. By 1640, nearly two-dozen varieties were grown in England and Kent County became known as the number one cherry producer. Rather finicky, this delicate fruit requires specific growing conditions. The fertile moisture-laden valleys of the Pacific Northwest ideally meet the cherry's fussy demands. Offering warm days and cools nights along with sophisticated modern technology, this prime area produces the very finest cherries worldwide.
