Mache has been cultivated in France since the 17th century, and in France it is known as doucette. It is also known as "lamb's lettuce" because its leaves resemble the size and shape of a lamb's tongue.

In northern climates, it requires a thick mulch to survive the winter. It was named "society" garlic because eating it doesn't create bad breath, even though its taste is similar to real garlic. The species name "violacea" comes from the Latin for "violet".
