Geography/History
Native to South Africa and preferring well-drained light soil, this upright drought-tolerant evergreen plant is of the species Tulbaghia (tool-BADGE-ee-uh) violacea. In northern climates, it requires a thick mulch to survive the winter. It was named "society" garlic because eating it doesn't create bad breath, even though its taste is similar to real garlic. The species name "violacea" comes from the Latin for "violet".
