Maui Onions
Two characteristics set the Maui onion apart from other yellow onions: the high sugar and high moisture content of its flesh.
Cantaloupe Melon
The cantaloupe is defined by two elements: its roughly netted stone and green colored skin and its aromatic orange-coral colored flesh. When perfectly ripe, the flesh is juicy, unctuous and sweet.
Snapdragons are typically available during the summer months.
Description/Taste
Growing in every color except blue, the erect spikes of the lovely snapdragon are covered with buds that open from the bottom to the top. Colors include pink, purple, lavender, white, yellow, orange and burgundy. This full-blossomed edible flower's flavor can vary from bland to a tangy bitter taste.
Applications
Always remove the petals from the calyx before eating snapdragons. Flowers are perishable and demand immediate attention.
Geography/History
Although snapdragons grew in ancient gardens, the actual origin of this age-old flower is uncertain but some believe it was the Mediterranean basin. Some plant researchers believe these lovely flowers grew wild in Spain and Italy. Its Latin species name, Antirrhinum majus, comes from the Greek for "nose-like". "Anti" in Greek means "like" and "rhinos" means "snout". This rather hardy perennial loves regular watering and full sun unless in hot summer climates when partial shade is necessary. Snapdragons flourish from San Bernardino to Santa Clara, California, both in the coastal ranges and the Sierras.
