Royal Ansel cherries are an extra-large variety that ripens one to two weeks ahead Bing cherries. They have a firm dark red skin and deeply pigmented flesh. They are a uniform round shape and known for developing small spurs. Royal Ansel are a very sweet and juicy cherry with low acid.
Royal Ansel cherries are available late spring through summer.
All cherries are members of the family, Prunus and are descendents of the wild cherry, Prunus avium. They are classified as stone fruits (fruits containing a singular central seed), alongside apricots, plums, peaches and nectarines. Royal Ansel cherries are known for having spurs, a small hard growth at the stem end.
Royal Ansel cherries contain anthocyanins, the red pigment inherently found within berries. Anthocyanins are potent antioxidants that are being heavily researched for their potential health benefits, including anti-inflammation and pain reduction. Cherries are also a good source of vitamins A and C, calcium and iron.
They Royal Ansel's exceptionally large size and super sweet flavor make it a wonderful raw snacking cherry. Like other varieties, they are also quite versatile extending uses into sweet and savory recipes. Their inherent sweetness pairs well with strong game meats, most notable water fowl such as duck, but also pork products and poultry. They balances well against salty and creamy cheeses such as burrata, feta, mascarpone and brie. They cook down into silky jams, jellies, pie fillings, dessert toppings, and even chutney or barbecue sauce. They can be preserved in maraschino liqueur or even brandy for cocktails or baking applications. Cherries also pair well with other stone fruit, basil, hazelnut oil, pine nuts, fennel, pistachios, arugula, yogurt, cream, dark chocolate and berries such as blueberry and blackberry.
The first documentation of cherry cultivation dates back to 4000 B.C. in modern day China. Cherries were brought through ancient trade routes into Turkey, which is known as the crossroads of Asia and Europe as it has historically been the center of major trade routes. It is believed that cherries were named after the Turkish town of Cerasus. Cherry trees flourish in Mediterranean climates and temperate climatic zones that experience four seasons. The so called "Royal" cherry varieties are often regarded as larger than life in both size and flavor, known for being bigger than average and full of concentrated sweetness. Other Royal varieties include, Brynn, Edie, Elaine, Helen, Lee, Rainier and Tenaya.
