Current Facts
The Orange-Flesh honeydew is a hybrid variety, a cross between a Cantaloupe and a honeydew. It is classified as a winter melon. Winter melons ripen slowly and are not ready to eat until late fall. The Orange-Flesh honeydew melon, like other winter melons, is hardy and has a long shelf-life.
Description/Taste
The Orange-Flesh honeydew is oval to round in shape. When ripe its skin is white, pale yellow or blush pink, similar to common honeydews. Its flesh will actually have a flavor, texture an aroma more similar to a cantaloupe, though. It will be salmon colored, subtly sweet, succulent and slightly unctuous.
Nutritional Value
Orange-Flesh honeydews have the highest concentration of beta carotene, making them the most Vitamin C dense of honeydew melon varieties.
Applications
The Orange-Flesh honeydew melons can be used in fresh or raw preparations, both sweet and savory. It is not found to be suited well for cooking. Fresh orange honeydew can be used as a breakfast fruit and as a salad ingredient. It makes a perfect element in cold or fresh desserts. It also can be used as an ingredient in drinks. Orange-Flesh honeydew pairs well with feta and goat cheeses, almonds and hazelnuts, mint, basil and citrus. Orange-Flesh honeydew may be substituted for Cantaloupe in most applications.
Geography/History
Because of continuous hybridization throughout dozens of countries for centuries, there are countless varieties of melons. Due to serious cross-pollination and in order to grow true cultivars, melons must be planted far away from other varieties to avoid another new melon crossbreed. The Orange-Flesh honeydew's cross pollination was purposely and purposefully intended to improve upon the honeydew and Cantaloupe; their best attributes developed and highlighted within a singular variety.
