Mirza melons are exceptionally large, weighing as much as 25 pounds and measuring up to 60 centimeters long. They have an elongated shape with a smooth rind that is creamy yellow in color with faint horizontal stripes and rough beige netting. Its flesh has a creamy ivory hue with an oval seed cavity. When ripe, its flesh is intensely sweet, succulent and juicy with a floral aroma and undertones of honey and spice.
Mirza melons are available in the summer months.
The Mirza is a variety of sweet melon believed to be a descendant of an early bitter melon of the agrestis sub-species. Botanically classified as Cucumis melo, it is an ancient cultivar native to central Asia that has found a recent resurgence in California’s Central Valley. Mirza melons, and other heirloom-style melons like them, are regarded as national treasures in their homeland. To protect these old varieties, Uzbekistan now has one of the largest melon germplasm collections in the world with 1,330 accessions.
Mirza melons are most often eaten raw and may be used similarly to other sweet melons. In their native Uzbekistan, it is common practice to let those melons with imperfect exteriors become overripe in the fields. They are harvested once their sugar levels have reached maximum saturation and sliced then sun dried and braided into a traditional Uzbek delicacy.
The name Mirza has roots in both Russian and Farsi, meaning "prince" or "high nobleman."
All sweet melons are native to central Asia, specifically modern day Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, northern Iran and northeastern Iraq. With the spread of Islam and ever-growing trade routes, the seeds of these fruits dispersed to India, Egypt and across the Mediterranean into Europe. Like other Uzbek melons, the Mirza is prized for its superior flavor and sweetness. Of the countries in the region, Uzbekistan has the largest amount of land devoted to melons. Much like those in California, their long, hot and dry summers are optimal for growing the best tasting melons.
