Seasons/Availability
Radish flowers are available year round.
Current Facts
The radish is a member of the Brassicaceae or mustard family along with broccoli, cabbage, turnip and kale. The Brassicaceae family is also known as Cruciferae, a name that was inspired by the signature cross shape that the petals of flowers in this family form.
Description/Taste
Radish flowers are petite blooms consisting of four petals forming the shape of a Greek cross attached to four yellow stamens and a thin green stem. The delicate petals are veined and can be varying hues of purple, white or a combination of both. The flowers can grow on singular stems or in clusters and have a subtle pepper flavor, similar to that of a radish.
Applications
Radish flowers are perfect for use in fresh preparations. Add to green, grain and stacked salads or float atop cold soups. Incorporate radish flowers and fresh herbs into butter, sour cream or soft cheeses to make an attractive spread for bread and crackers. Use as an edible garnish on frittatas, quiche and stir-fries or add to brine when making pickled vegetables.
Geography/History
Radish is derived from the Latin word for root, radix. Its Greek name, Raphanus translates to “quickly appearing” which is reflective of the rapid speed in which the radish germinates. Radishes are believed to be native to China. Records also indicate that the Egyptians and Greeks were among some of the first people to cultivate radishes, the Greeks revered them so that they sculpted gold and silver replicas of them to honor the Gods.
