Wasabi is a perennial and a member of the Cruciferae family. It is grown mainly for its underground rhizome (tuber) which produces branch-less, edible leaves above ground. A mature wasabi root is firm, cylindrical, brown and green-skinned and tapered.

They are the official flower of the city of Chicago and also the birth month flower for November. The name Chrysanthemum comes from the Greek word for gold (chryos) and for flower (anthemon).

Japan celebrates the Mum flower annually on September 6th at the Festival of Happiness otherwise known as National Chrysanthemum Day.
Geography/History
Native to China, Mums date back to 500 B.C. From there they spread to Japan where they were highly honored and used as the Emperors crest and also named national flower in 910 A.D. The Mum was first introduced to Europe in the 17th century, conversely to their revered status in Japan in many parts of Europe Mum flowers were seen as a symbol of death and commonly used in funerals. The Mum made its way to the United States in the early 1900’s. They thrive in full sun, with moist and well-drained soils.
