The MAG® melon was developed specifically to have an exceptionally sweet flavor and aroma with a greater flesh to seed ratio. Similar in appearance to the classic cantaloupe melon the MAG® melon is covered in a golden tan hued, roughly netted exterior. Its interior flesh is tender and juicy with a superbly sweet flavor and vivid salmon-orange color. Its seed cavity is smaller in size than the classic cantaloupe melon yielding a melon with more edible flesh. The MAG® melon is flush with sweet juice and offers classic floral aromas with an aromatic musk.
The MAG® melon is available year-round.
A member of the Cucurbitaceae family the MAG® melon is a netted muskmelon type, botanically known as Cucumis melo reticulatus. The MAG® melon, also known as MAG-nificent melon, is trademarked and grown exclusively by Del Monte. Strict guidelines for growing, harvesting, packing and transporting MAG® melons are practiced to ensure a high quality product. Melons must also meet a set of standards in terms of appearance, texture and taste in order to be marketed under the MAG® melon name.
Similar to the cantaloupe melon, the MAG® melon is very low in sodium, fat and cholesterol and is an excellent source of dietary fiber. The MAG® melon is bred to be higher in nutrients than the traditional cantaloupe melon and is an excellent source of potassium, carotene and vitamins A and C.
The MAG® melon can be used in fresh preparations both sweet and savory, typically it is not used in cooked applications. Add to fruit, grain and green salads or serve atop cereal and yogurt. It can be used in a variety of dessert preparations such as fresh fruit tarts, popsicles and ice cream. Diced MAG® melon will add sweetness to salsas and chutney. Pureed it makes an excellent addition to smoothies, cocktails and frescas. The sweet flavor of the MAG® melon pairs well with feta, hard cheeses, strawberries, blueberries, mint, arugula, cucumber and prosciutto. MAG® melons will keep at room temperature for up to a week after fully ripe. Cut melon will keep in the refrigerator wrapped in plastic for up to four days.
The MAG® melon has a short growing cycle and thrives in moderate to warm climates that are rarely prone to frost and freeze. Created by Del Monte, the MAG® melon is grown in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Arizona and California and is distributed throughout North America.
