Lime mint is a citrus variety grown for its fragrant leaves. Mint is a natural bee attractor and insects pollinate up to 80% of the flowering plant population. Therefor, natural hybridization occurs often within the mint family. hence the evolution of lime mint as well as so many other mint varieties. Lime mint offers a slight fragrance and its flavor is an acquired taste, almost medicinal in quality. It lacks the true mint quality that common mint delivers.

Mentha piperita var. citrata. is lime mint's botanical name and it is a hybrid variety of mint. Mint hybrids occur commonly each year and although species within Mentha have origins within Europe, Africa and Asia, they have been naturalized in temperate regions of North America and Australia.
