Japanese Black radish, also known as Kuro daikon, Spanish radish, or simply Black radish is a member of the Brassicaceae family. Botanically they are a part of Raphanus sativus and an herbaceous plant that is typically grown biannually.
In Japan the Japanese Black radish is sometimes used as a remedy for healthy skin and hair. It is rich in vitamin C which acts as a natural antioxidant for your skin, and vitamin B that can help skin disorders caused by fungal or bacterial infections. Also it is thought that the spicy radish can stimulate hair roots and enhance the blood circulation of the scalp thus nourishing hair.
The unique contrast of the black skin and the white flesh of a Japanese Black radish makes it an ideal addition to salads, sushi, and sashimi. In addition, they can be sliced and steamed, grilled, sautéed, or fried. Sliced Japanese Black radish will complement stews, miso soups, tempura, roasted vegetable medleys, and pickles. For storing, cut off stems and leaves, wrap them in a newspaper and store them in a cold dark place or vegetable compartment of the refrigerator. It is best to use them as soon as you get them, however they can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
Daikon like radishes such as the Japanese black have been used in the Japanese expression, "Daikon Ashi" which means thick legs and was used to tease women from the Edo period.
Black radishes have been cultivated longer than any other radish and for some time were the primary radish consumed throughout the world. With the advent of new radish varieties offering an improved flavor and texture the Black radish has since fallen out of favor. They can on occasion still be found in Japan, France and the United States when in season. In Japan Japanese Black radishes are produced in Hokkaido, Chiba prefecture and Aomori prefecture then shipped overseas.
