The Hot Paper Lantern chile pepper will ripen from green to orange and finally when fully mature to a bright orange-red hue. The chiles can be used at any stage of coloring but are most commonly utilized when fully mature and red. The pods have an elongated pendant shape slightly reminiscent of that of a lantern, a form which habanero type peppers are known. Growing on average between three to four inches in length the Hot Paper Lantern chile is longer than traditional habaneros. The walls of the pepper pods are thin and its skin has a waxy sheen with slight exterior wrinkling. Known as one of the hottest peppers in the world the Hot Paper Lantern has a sweet pepper aroma and flavor with nuances of fruit and packs an extreme heat offering upwards of 400,000- 450,000 Scoville units.

A habanero type pepper the Hot Paper Lantern chile pepper is a part of the botanical group Capsicum chinense. Larger in size than most habanero varieties the Hot Paper Lantern is also known to be an early season type habanero and is marketed as “a habanero for the north” by many seed catalogs, a name it has gained given its ability to be grown successfully in cooler climates.
Hot Paper Lantern chile peppers are utilized for the blistering hot heat they offer. Whole pods can be added to curries, soups and stewed preparations. Caution should be taken when cooking as to not let the pods burst which could render a dish to be too hot for consumption. Cooked down they can be used to make pepper jelly or liquid hot sauces. The walls of the Paper Lantern pod are very thin which makes them ideal for drying. Dried peppers can be saved and reconstituted later or ground down to make a powdered seasoning. The spicy pepper flavor of the Paper Lantern pairs well with citrus juice such as lime, orange and yuzu, tropical fruits such as pineapple and mango, tomatoes, avocados, all spice, shellfish, pulled pork, vinegar based sauces, creamy cheeses, tequila and mescal. To store fresh Hot Paper Lantern chiles keep refrigerated and use within one to two weeks.
Chinense peppers such as the Hot Paper Lantern and habanero are all very closely related and commonly grown throughout the Caribbean and Mexico and depending upon where they are grown they will have varying names. Maturing in only seventy days this shorter growing season makes the Hot Paper Lantern ideal for cooler climates. Paper Lantern chile plants are more prolific fruiters than traditional habanero plants and will have a high yield of pods when growing conditions are sufficient. Plants will thrive in fertile, well drained soils which are rich in calcium and phosphorus.
