Current Facts
Donut™ peaches are grown commercially in Central California and Washington. They are also known as Chinese peach, Jupiter peach, Saturn peach, flat peach and saucer peach.
Description/Taste
Resembling a donut, the characteristic indentation in the center of this peach influenced its name. The Donut Peach is approximately 1 to 2 inches in height and 2 to 3 inches in diameter. The pit (free-stone variety) is about the size of a pistachio nut. The outer skin is fuzzy and pale yellow with an orange-red blush that covers a creamy inner flesh. Donut peaches are low in acid, juicy and have a sweet classic peach flavor with a faint hint of almond.
Nutritional Value
High in vitamin A and vitamin C, peaches have no cholesterol, fat or sodium. This small-sized peach contains about 40 calories.
Applications
The shape of the Donut peach makes it perfect for grilling, simply cut in half to remove the stone before placing on the grill. Once warmed through, the skin will slide off. Grilled or sautéed Donut™ peaches especially complement duck entrees. Similar to regular peaches, they are best stored at room temperature but can be refrigerated to extend their shelf life.
Geography/History
Originally the flat varieties of peaches had no special names. Simply called Chinese flat peaches, Chinese saucer peaches, or peento peaches. Today, they are called "donut peaches" and are grown commercially in Central California and Washington. A variety of the white peach, Donut™ peaches are an heirloom variety.
