The Daily 11 avocado is a very large variety, about 3 times larger than the common Hass avocado and can weigh up to five pounds. The California avocado has an elongated pear shape that can be somewhat oblong. The skin of the Daily 11 is thick and smooth with a medium green color, which takes on a matte finish when ripe. The seed within the Daily 11 avocado is small, leaving an ample amount of dense flesh. Daily 11 avocados have a smooth and creamy texture with a rich, sometimes oily flavor.
Daily 11 avocados are available in the fall and into the winter months.
Daily 11 avocados are the largest avocados grown in California. These elongated avocados are related to Hass avocados and are popular for their size and large ratio of flesh to stone. Unlike most avocados that have between 60% and 70% flesh, Daily 11 avocados have 82% flesh. Most often sold as a novelty, Daily 11 avocados are not commercially available.
The large Daily 11 avocados can be eaten fresh, the flesh scooped from the skin and the seed removed. Mash the pulp to make a spread for breads or sandwiches, add tomatoes, onions and cilantro for guacamole. The rich, dense flesh can be sliced to add to salads or sandwiches or served as a garnish atop a number of dishes.
Daily 11 avocados are descendent from Queen avocados and were discovered in 1941 in Ventura County, California. The Daily 11 avocado can be seen at County Fairs in Southern California, on display for its unusually large size. The largest California variety by most standards, the Daily 11 avocado is grown as a novelty or by small farms and can be found at local farmer’s markets in California.
