Current Facts
For years, the Blue Lake bean has been considered the standard-setting pole bean. Despite it's origins as a canning bean, many gardeners and growers now consider it a gourmet bean. In the more recent decades the Blue Lake bean has surpassed the KY, aka Kentucky Wonder, to recognized as the premier gourmet bean.
Description/Taste
Blue Lake beans are dark green, round in cross section, string-less, firm, and straight. Their flavor is distinctively mild and sweet, with a crisp-tender texture. Blue Lake beans produce a heavy crop of pods that can reach 6 to 7 inches in length.
Geography/History
Blue Lake beans were grown as a canning bean in the early part of the 20th century in the Blue Lake District near Ukiah, California. They found their way to Oregon in 1923 where they were extensively researched, resulting in the development of the new string-less bean variety.
