Description/Taste
Long slender fruits of a tropical treelike plant, bananas are encased in a tough inedible easy-to-peel biodegradable skin. Picked green and then allowed to ripen, the soft succulent flesh of this tender fruit is delectably sweet. Yellow-skinned bananas have developed their fullest and sweetest flavor. Bananas speckled with brown spots on their skins are said to offer an even sweeter taste.
Nutritional Value
Rich in potassium, magnesium and other minerals, bananas provide vitamin A and vitamin B-complex, plus have twice the vitamin C as apples. Low in fat and protein, they are high in carbohydrates. One medium banana has about 90 calories.
Ethnic/Cultural Info
Ancient Egyptians enjoyed the culinary virtues of the Abyssinian banana, but travelers from Europe soon found more edible and sweeter bananas in semi-tropical and tropical areas. Bananas are a staple food in hot countries and are often used as a vegetable, plus a source of flour as well as a fruit.
Geography/History
Originating in Southeast Asia, bananas were one of the first cultivated fruits. The name banana comes from the Arabic word for finger, "banan", referring to the finger-like extensions of the fruit. Hence, a clump of bananas is called a "hand". Taking about a year for the fruits to develop, the banana plant is removed after harvest and replaced with a new planting. Bananas are one of the few fruits that ripen after being cut from the plant. Bananas allowed to ripen on the plant are said not to be as sweet as those picked green. The United States consumes more than half of the world production of this very favorite fruit.
