Butter lettuce is a leaf lettuce. Leaf varieties have loose heads and are known as the "cut and come again" lettuces as they can be harvested multiple times from a single plant. They are great short season varieties as well as more heat-tolerant than head lettuce.

Description/Taste
The tender and loose granny smith apple green leaves have a subtle mild flavor which allows them countless culinary pairings.

Geography/History
Butter leaf lettuce's origin: Mediterranean basin in its original form. There are countless varieties that have been developed in the United States. The benchmark, Compositae family was developed by John Bibb in kentucky in the 1850's. This variety is grown on a hydroponic farm in Pico Rivera, California. Hydroponic farms can often produce 3 to 7 times the harvest of a soil-based farm.
