Seasons/Availability
Raspberries are a composite fruit traditionally available in mid-summer, but with new harvesting innovations they can be enjoyed all year long.
Current Facts
Most cultivars of raspberries are self-fruitful and do not require pollinizers. Berries are mature when they have completely developed their characteristic color, and are easily detached from the plant. Almost all of the crops are processed. Only 10% of the crop is sold fresh.
Description/Taste
Red raspberries are delicate, sweet and slightly tart, containing lower sugar content compared to other fruits. Their delicate texture makes them extremely perishable and should be eaten within a few days of being picked.
Geography/History
Red raspberries are indigenous to both Asia Minor and North America. Raspberries were first introduced into cultivation in Europe nearly 450 years ago. By the early nineteenth century, more than 20 cultivars of red raspberry were grown in both England and the USA.
