Current Facts
Apples have long been referred to as Nature's toothbrush! While they don't actually clean the teeth, they promote dental hygiene. Biting and chewing an apple is a stimulant to the gums. The apple's sweetness promotes the flow of saliva which reduces tooth decay by decreasing the levels of bacteria in the mouth.

Description/Taste
It's sweet...no, it's tart...wait...it's deliciously both! Fifty percent sweet and fifty percent tart, the lovely Crimson Gold apple is a favorite of apple fans. A pretty little fruit, this crisp-textured apple sports a reddish hue over a creamy yellow color. Its alias is understandably "sweet crab apple" due to its spicy tangy taste.

Nutritional Value
An apple has no cholesterol and contains pectin, a beneficial fiber provided by apples. This fiber may actually work to reduce the body's cholesterol level and help prevent heart attacks. Pectin also slows glucose metabolism in diabetics. Apples contain potassium, which may reduce the chances of a stroke, and have a trace of boron believed to build bones and to increase mental vitality. Apples offer a small amount of vitamin A and vitamin C and have only a trace of sodium. An average-size apple contains about 80 calories. Eating five daily servings of fruits and vegetables lowers the chances of cancer. A recent study found that eating nine or ten daily servings of fruits and vegetables, combined with three servings of low-fat dairy products, were effective in lowering blood pressure.

Applications
For those who love a sweet-tart apple, this apple is the perfect choice. Snappy in taste and texture, simply enjoy out of hand. Great for juicing, this apple has super stamina when cooked. Add its spunky goodness to mixed green salads. Make muffins and apple crisp. Ideal apple flavor for quick breads and pie. To store, refrigerate in coldest part of refrigerator.

Geography/History
A cross between a Lady apple and a crab apple, the Crimson Gold apple is organically grown in Northern California where the climate is ideal for producing top quality apples. Crimson Gold is actually an apple surrounded by mystery. Of crab apple ancestry, this marvelous little apple is said to be the seventh and last of the apples developed by the partnership around the 1940s between Albert Etter and George Roeding Jr., the owner of California Nursery Company (CNC) of Niles District, which today is Fremont, California. When things went sour due to financial problems, many of the apple trees of CNC were headed for extinction. In the 1970's, dedicated researchers began studying the fruit still growing in the ruins of the decaying Etter orchards. The Crimson Gold is one of these long lost apples that will live and grow again, delighting apple fans with its great taste. Specialty Produce strongly supports California agricultural and local growers.
