Geography/History
Locally grown at Fresh Origins Farm, San Marcos, California, the MicroFlower™ series of edible delights is just one of owner/grower David Sasuga's popular garden-fresh specialties. Dianthus, a member of the carnation family native to Europe and Asia, grows in a wide variety of striking colors including pink, red, salmon, fuchsia, purple and white and any color in between. A large genus of annuals, biennials and perennials, all have the characteristic ruffled edges on lovely petals. Many are quite fragrant, but the spicy scent varies with different varieties. Pink is the well-known common name for most of the spring- and summer-flowering plants in this genus. Also known as China pink, the flowers are produced on gorgeous bluish-gray-green grass-like foliage. Cold-tolerant and heat-resistant and preferring well-drained alkaline soil, mature ornamental plants grow twenty-two to twenty-four inches tall. The flowers can flourish in partial shade, but full sun brings out their very best blooms. This flower loves the California climate. Specialty Produce enthusiastically endorses our local growers and the valuable California farming industry.
