Current Facts
This apple is sometimes spelled Ashmead's Kernal Apple.

Description/Taste
Organic Ashmead's Kernel apples are said to be one of the very best tasting apple varieties grown and a favorite of serious apple fans. Offering the perfect blend of sweet and tart, the more golden in color, the better the flavor. Small to medium size and sometimes lopsided or flattish-round in shape, its scrumptious flesh is creamy yellow and releases an apple-fresh fragrance. This apple characteristically produces "russeting", which is the term for the speckles that may appear on its skin.

Nutritional Value
Containing traces of vitamin A and vitamin B, apples offer moderate amounts of iron, calcium and phosphorus. The malic acid and high pectin present in a raw apple help promote good digestion and elimination. The apple skin furnishes essential dietary fiber. Eating five daily servings of fruits and vegetables lowers the chances of cancer. A recent study found eating nine or ten daily servings of fruits and vegetables, combined with three servings of low-fat dairy products, were effective in lowering blood pressure.

Applications
Delicious out of hand, this versatile apple variety makes super cider, awesome applesauce and delightful desserts. Enhance fruit salads with its great taste and texture. Use as garnish. To store, refrigerate in coldest part of refrigerator. An excellent keeper.

Geography/History
Locally grown at Windrose Farm in California, this special apple is especially favored in Europe and was developed from seed planted in the mid-1700s by Dr. Thomas Ashmead in Gloucester, England, for whom it is named. "Kernel" is actually an old name for seed. Located just east of Paso Robles, Windrose Farm specializes in Fruits, Roots, Beans and Greens. Fortunately finding fifty fertile acres in 1990 that would soon flourish with premium heirloom apples, winter squash, melons, potatoes, garlic, onions, leeks, dry beans and greens, by 1995 Windrose Farm's thriving crops were in full swing. This successful farm contributes a compatible climate for its outstanding produce. The region's microclimate, which is when there is a dramatic temperature swing of at least fifty degrees Fahrenheit that can occur within the same twenty-four hours and from season to season, is credited for Windrose Farm's superior heirloom apples, melons, carrots and many other of its beautiful and flavorful bounty. Specialty Produce strongly supports and endorses the California farming industry and our local farmers, ranchers and growers.
