Description/Taste
Kidd's Red apple, also known as Kidd's Orange Red apple, is a medium size variety that produces greenish-yellow skin brushed with a crimson color. Slightly ribbed, irregular purplish-red stripes also appear along with sporadic russetting. Fine textured but firm, the sweet flesh is quite aromatic. As this apple ripens, a pink blush appears then disappears.

Nutritional Value
Providing satisfying bulk with few calories, one medium-size apple has about 80 calories. Low in fat and sodium, apples are cholesterol-free. A source of vitamin C, apples contain boron, a mineral that may boost alertness. Eating five daily servings of fruits and vegetables lowers the risk of cancer.

Applications
One of the favorite apples for fresh eating. This apple sweetie can take the heat in the kitchen and holds up well when cooked. Makes a great dessert apple for cobblers, crisps and crumbles. Perfect for pie and Brown Betty. A good apple choice for making juice and hard cider. Enhance fruit salads with its healthy goodness. Include its flavorful accent in a variety of savory dishes. To store, refrigerate in the coldest part of the refrigerator.

Ethnic/Cultural Info
Kidd's Red apples are especially popular with Australian apple growers as well as New Zealand apple growers.

Geography/History
Locally grown at Windrose Farm in California, this unusual apple is a successful cross between Cox's Orange Pippin apple and the Red Delicious apple, which deliciously occurred in New Zealand in 1924. Named for an apple enthusiast, and an amateur at that, J.H. Kidd of Greytown, Wairarapa, New Zealand, is also credited for developing the popular Gala apple. Also known as Delco, this name was derived from its parentage: Delicious and Cox's Orange Pippin. This variety is sweeter than the Cox's Orange Pippin, one of its parents. Today these fine apples grow in the United States. Located just east of Paso Robles, Windrose Farm specializes in Fruits, Roots, Beans and Greens. Fortunately finding fifty fertile acres in 1990 that would soon flourish with premium heirloom apples, winter squash, melons, potatoes, garlic, onions, leeks, dry beans and greens, by 1995 Windrose Farm's thriving crops were in full swing. This successful farm contributes a compatible climate for its outstanding produce. The region's microclimate, which is when there is a dramatic temperature swing of at least fifty degrees Fahrenheit that can occur within the same twenty-four hours and from season to season, is credited for Windrose Farm's superior heirloom apples, melons, carrots and many other of its beautiful and flavorful bounty. Specialty Produce adamantly endorses and strongly supports our local growers, farmers, ranchers and the California farming industry.
