Current Facts
Just what causes a "mealy" apple? Windrose Farm tells Specialty Produce that an apple that has hung on the tree too long or has had too much exposure to direct sun will cause an apple to become mealy. Specialty Produce enthusiastically endorses and strongly supports our local California growers, ranchers and farmers and the California farming industry.

Description/Taste
It is said that one cannot judge a book by its cover, and the same apparently goes for apples as well. Pale-yellow and sporadically brushed with brownish-red markings, russet dots pepper the very aromatic White Pearmain apple's waxy exterior. Producing a rather tough skin, the tasty firm flesh inside is yellowish-white, crisp and juicy. Its forte: a dessert apple.

Nutritional Value
An apple has no cholesterol and contains pectin, a fiber that fights cholesterol. Pectin also slows glucose metabolism in diabetics. Apples contain potassium, which may reduce the chances of a stroke and boron, believed to build bones and to increase mental vitality. Apples offer a small amount of vitamin A and vitamin C and have only a trace of sodium. An average-sized apple contains about 80 calories. Eating five daily servings of fruits and vegetables lowers the chances of cancer. A recent study found that eating nine or ten daily servings of fruits and vegetables, combined with three servings of low-fat dairy products, were effective in lowering blood pressure.

Applications
Perfect for pie. Make delicious desserts including apple crisp, apple crumbles and cobblers. Excellent for applesauce and apple butter. Dice; fold into muffin batter. Poach in light syrup; sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg. Add to fruit salad or toss in mixed green fresh salads for color and crunch. To store, refrigerate in coldest part of refrigerator.

Geography/History
Locally grown at Windrose Farm in California, this heirloom apple has many aliases including White Winter Pearmain, Winter White Pearmain, Cambellite, Campbellite, White Pearmain and Griffin's Pearmain in Texas. The history of this apple is under scrutiny and unclear when it comes to its American origin and distribution. Thought to possibly have had its tasty beginning in the eastern United States, some say it was recorded as a variety in 1849 and others say it was 1858.. However, some believe it is an English apple that dates back to to 1200 A.D. Wow. Who's right? Located just east of Paso Robles, Windrose Farm specializes in Fruits, Roots, Beans and Greens. Fortunately finding fifty fertile acres in 1990 that would soon flourish with premium heirloom apples, winter squash, melons, potatoes, garlic, onions, leeks, dry beans and greens, by 1995 Windrose Farm's thriving crops were in full swing. This successful farm contributes a compatible climate for its outstanding produce. The region's microclimate, which is when there is a dramatic temperature swing of at least fifty degrees Fahrenheit that can occur within the same twenty-four hours and from season to season, is credited for Windrose Farm's superior heirloom apples, melons, carrots and many other of its beautiful and flavorful bounty. Specialty Produce strongly supports and endorses the California farming industry and our local farmers, ranchers and growers.
