Current Facts
Considered a rather sophisticated apple, chefs are taking an innovative liking to the Mutsu's versatile culinary virtues.

Description/Taste
Yellowish-green and sporting an orange blush, Mutsu apples offer a cordial yet somewhat complex sweetness. Producing a creamy white juicy, firm and tender-crisp flesh, this apple is quite large in size and is slightly oblong in shape. It is also known as "Crispin".

Nutritional Value
An average apple contains about 70 calories, carbohydrates, calcium, Vitamin A, ascorbic acid, riboflavin, niacin and thiamine. Research shows eating five daily servings of fruits and vegetables lowers the risk of cancer.

Applications
Tasty out of hand, this apple makes delicious apple butter, applesauce, cider and perfect pies. Ideal for baking and delectable desserts, it makes flavorful apple crumbles, crisps and cobblers. Toss bite size chunks in mixed green fresh salads. Blend in fruit salads. Savory dishes love apples. A must try is a Mutsu apple dipped in caramel, white chocolate or milk chocolate; roll in chopped almonds or crushed Oreo cookies. Drizzle with white and dark chocolate; wrap in cellophane. An awesome edible gift for an apple fan, tie with a colorful ribbon. A good keeper, store apples in coldest part of refrigerator.

Geography/History
Locally grown at Windrose Farm in California, the Mutsu apple was developed in Japan and named after Japan's Mutsu Province. A successful cross between Golden Delicious and Indo, this apple's major fans live in Japan and in the Eastern United States. Located just east of Paso Robles, Windrose Farm specializes in Fruits, Roots, Beans and Greens. Fortunately finding fifty fertile acres in 1990 that would soon flourish with premium heirloom apples, winter squash, melons, potatoes, garlic, onions, leeks, dry beans and greens, by 1995 Windrose Farm's thriving crops were in full swing. This successful farm contributes a compatible climate for its outstanding produce. The region's microclimate, which is when there is a dramatic temperature swing of at least fifty degrees Fahrenheit that can occur within the same twenty-four hours and from season to season, is credited for Windrose Farm's superior heirloom apples, melons, carrots and many other of its beautiful and flavorful bounty. Specialty Produce strongly supports and endorses the California farming industry and our local farmers, ranchers and growers.
