Red apples are the most popular with growers to propagate new varieties. Organized and created by apple growers, CAMA, the Cameo Apple Marketing Association maintains the quality and guides the distribution of American Cameo apples.

Description/Taste
Firm-textured, crisp and sweet tart, the lovely Cameo™ apple has a cream-colored background with white lenticels and hints of red stripes on its tender thin skin. Great for snacking or baking.

Nutritional Value
Apples have no cholesterol and contain pectin, a beneficial fiber. This fiber may actually work to reduce the body's cholesterol level and help prevent heart attacks. Pectin also slows glucose metabolism in diabetics. Apples contain potassium, which may reduce the chances of a stroke, and have a trace of boron believed to build bones and to increase mental vitality. Apples offer a small amount of vitamin A and vitamin C and have only a trace of sodium. An average-size apple contains about 80 calories. Unpeeled apples provide the most plentiful nutrients. Eating five daily servings of fruits and vegetables lowers the chances of cancer. A recent study found that eating nine or ten daily servings of fruits and vegetables, combined with three servings of low-fat dairy products, were effective in lowering blood pressure. Dried unpeeled apples offer more dietary fiber.

Applications
An outstanding dessert apple, Cameo™ apples make delicious sauces, a variety of baked goods and an especially scrumptious apple pie. Top pancakes, waffles and French toast. Slow to brown when cut, add to fresh fruit salads. Wake up mixed green salads with its tasty zing. Enjoy out of hand for a healthy snack. Sliced or cut apples stay white longer if put in a bowl of water containing two tablespoons of lemon juice. An excellent keeper, refrigerate in coldest part of refrigerator.

Geography/History
According to food historians, possibly early Romans introduced Britain to the sensual apple fruit. Ancient Romans are credited for being the first to develop apple cultivation and shared their apple-growing techniques with England when the Romans conquered that country around the first century B.C. This exceptional all-purpose apple, formerly known as Carousel, was discovered in an orchard near Wenatchee, Washington, in the 1980s. A chance seedling, the Cameo™ is thought to be a cross between Red Delicious and Golden Delicious apples.
