Current Facts
The locally grown Jonagold apple is a consistent taste-test winner. Apples have long been referred to as Nature's toothbrush! While they don't actually clean the teeth, apples promote dental hygiene. Biting and chewing an apple stimulates the gums. The apple's sweetness promotes the flow of saliva which reduces tooth decay by decreasing the levels of bacteria in the mouth.

Description/Taste
Just as delicious as it is gorgeous, the Jonagold apple offers the sweet-tart flavor of the Jonathan and the juicy crisp texture of the Golden Delicious. This beautiful golden-red apple is prized for its good looks and delicious flavor. Usually having a yellow background and an orangish-red blush, some may be appear dominantly red. A large apple, its color and taste blend the best of both of its popular parents, the Jonathan and Golden Delicious.

Nutritional Value
Cholesterol-free, apples contain pectin, a beneficial fiber. This dietary fiber may actually work to reduce the body's cholesterol level and studies claim it may possibly help to prevent heart attacks. Pectin also slows glucose metabolism in diabetics. Apples contain potassium, which may reduce the chances of a stroke and have a trace of boron believed to build bones and to increase mental vitality. Apples offer a small amount of vitamin A and vitamin C and have only a trace of sodium. An average-size apple contains about 80 calories. Unpeeled apples offer the most nutrition. Eating five daily servings of fruits and vegetables lowers the chances of cancer. A recent study found that eating nine or ten daily servings of fruits and vegetables, combined with three servings of low-fat dairy products, were effective in lowering blood pressure.

Applications
This versatile apple is ideal for eating fresh out of hand or for cooking and baking. Add its zing to fruit salads. Make flavorful sauces, tarts, cobblers, baked apples and pies. Flavor quick breads, muffins, cookies, cakes and a variety of desserts with its fresh taste. This exceptional apple makes a superior applesauce. Pep up stuffing with its tasty spirit. For flavorful fried apples, sauté apple slices in a little butter; sprinkle with a little cinnamon. Enjoy! Sliced or cut apples stay white longer if put in a bowl of water containing two tablespoons of lemon juice. To store, keep in the coldest part of refrigerator.

Geography/History
Pioneers traveled with prized apple scions (cuttings) and seeds across North America, planting valuable apple trees as they went. Spanish missionaries are credited with introducing apple varieties into California and soon apples were flourishing worldwide. Australia may have had their favorite Apple Granny but America had their own apple-loving connoisseur, too. As the story goes, a man named John Chapman, nicknamed Johnny Appleseed, became famous in the 1800s when he shared his apple cuttings and seeds across the country in the states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois and Indiana. Legend claims he traveled in old weathered clothes and wore a tin pot for a hat. A relatively new variety, Jonagold apples had their delicious debut in 1968 at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva. A triploid, this apple is a tasty cross between a tart Jonathan and a mellow Golden Delicious. At one time, it was the most popular apple in Western Europe. Not heat tolerant, Jonagolds require mildly cool growing conditions.
