Current Facts
Jonathan is an apple especially favored and popular for Halloween festivities due to its attractive color and children-friendly texture. Apples have long been referred to as Nature's toothbrush! While they don't actually clean the teeth, apples promote dental hygiene. Biting and chewing an apple stimulates the gums. The apple's sweetness promotes the flow of saliva which reduces tooth decay by decreasing the levels of bacteria in the mouth.

Description/Taste
Pretty Jonathan apples are a lovely crimson-red brushed with green highlights and offer a delicious flavor with an addicting spicy tang.

Nutritional Value
An apple has no cholesterol and contains pectin, a beneficial fiber. This fiber may actually work to reduce the body's cholesterol level and studies claim it may help prevent heart attacks. Pectin also slows glucose metabolism in diabetics. Apples contain potassium, which may reduce the chances of a stroke and have a trace of boron believed to build bones and to increase mental vitality. Apples offer a small amount of vitamin A and vitamin C and have only a trace of sodium. An average-size apple contains about 80 calories. Unpeeled apples provide the most nutritional benefits. Eating five daily servings of fruits and vegetables lowers the chances of cancer. A recent study found that eating nine or ten daily servings of fruits and vegetables, combined with three servings of low-fat dairy products, were effective in lowering blood pressure.

Applications
Because of this apple's exceptionally crisp texture and succulent tart flavor, it combines well with other apples to make yummy sauces and a refreshing apple juice or cider. To use apple cider as a spunky-tasting glaze, add a splotch of mustard, a sprinkle or two of vinegar or a shake of curry powder. Add this apple's fresh taste and crunch to fruit or mixed green salads. Portable, take it along for a healthy snack. Its firm texture is ideal for baking and cooking. Makes a great apple pie. Top a galette, a round flat cake made of flaky pastry dough. Sliced or cut apples stay white longer if put in a bowl of water containing two tablespoons of lemon juice. To store, keep in the coldest part of refrigerator. Apples kept at room temperature become mushy.

Geography/History
It was even the almighty apple that helped Sir Isaac Newton discover the laws of gravitation and motion in 1665 A.D. when he watched an apple fall to the ground in a straight line. That proved to be a great moment for the apple in the apple's extensive history. The Jonathan apple was discovered as a chance seedling in the 1820s at Woodstock, New York, and named for the man who first promoted it. Loving the climate and nurturing environmental conditions, Jonathan apples are locally grown at Julian, California.
