Current Facts
According to the U.S. Apple Association, the most popular varieties of apples include the following: Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Rome, Fuji, McIntosh, Gala, Jonathan, Empire, York, Idared, Newtown Pippin, Cortland, Rhode Island Greening and Northern Spy. Apples have long been referred to as Nature's toothbrush! While they don't actually clean the teeth, apples promote dental hygiene. Biting and chewing an apple stimulates the gums. The apple's sweetness promotes the flow of saliva which reduces tooth decay by decreasing the levels of bacteria in the mouth.
Description/Taste
An all-purpose apple, Golden Delicious apples are pale green to golden-yellow and sometimes acquire a faint flush. The flavors of these firm crisp white-fleshed apples vary. Grown in a cool climate, the amount of acid in this apple increases, creating a sweeter flavor. In warmer growing areas, their acidity content is less which makes the flavor somewhat bland. Uniform in shape, this apple's subtly textured skin protects its juicy flesh and is so tender it doesn't require peeling. The determining factors for a cooking apple include a fairly sweet and intense flavor, a more acid than sugar content and it maintains its shape.
Nutritional Value
One medium apple, weighing about 5.4 ounces, provides 22 grams of carbohydrates, 5 grams of dietary fiber, 8 per cent of RDA for vitamin C, 2 per cent of the RDA for vitamin A and iron and has about 80 calories. High in dietary fiber, apples contain a soluble fiber in the form of pectin, which helps lower cholesterol levels. Studies also claim pectin aids in preventing colon cancer. Unpeeled apples provide the most plentiful nutrients. Eating five daily servings of fruits and vegetables lowers the chances of cancer. A recent study found eating nine or ten daily servings of fruits and vegetables, combined with three servings of low-fat dairy products, were effective in lowering blood pressure.
Applications
Holding its shape well, Golden Delicious is an excellent choice for pies, sauces and baked apple desserts. This all-purpose apple's flesh resists browning making it perfect for fresh fruit or mixed green salads. Enjoy simply out of hand for a healthy in between meal snack. Use as edible garnish. A good keeper, this hardy variety maintains its firm quality four to eight weeks when refrigerated. Sliced or cut apples stay white longer if put in a bowl of water containing two tablespoons of lemon juice. To store, keep apples as cold as possible. Kept at room temperature, apples become mushy. This apple freezes well.
Geography/History
An American apple, the Golden Delicious had its beginning as a chance seedling on the West Virginia farm of Anderson H. Mullins in 1890 in Clay County and was originally named Mullins Yellow Seedling. Later in 1916, this apple was renamed the Golden Delicious when Paul Stark of Stark Brothers Nursery bit into it in 1914. Mullins sold the rights to the Golden Delicious apple to Stark Brothers Nursery and the rest is history. Since 1973, Clay County celebrates its famous apple with the annual Clay County Golden Delicious Festival. Surprising as it may seem by its familiar name, this apple is not related to Delicious. Golden Delicious apples are now the most widely grown apples in many countries. This fine apple is grown at Julian, California.
