Current Facts
Because of this luscious and lovely apple's pretty pink color and because one of its compatible parents was the Lady Williams apple, it was only appropriate and natural to name it in honor of its contributing and flavorful parent. Technically, its variety name is Cripps Pink Cultivar.

Description/Taste
Very distinctive in flavor and color, Pink Lady™ apples offer a delicious sweet-tart taste and a crisp slightly dry firm creamy-white flesh. This choice apple's tender skin has a lovely pink to reddish-pink blush over a yellow background. Considered the ultimate apple for fresh eating and for its exceptional dessert quality.

Nutritional Value
An apple has no cholesterol and contains pectin, a beneficial dietary fiber. This fiber may actually work to reduce the body's cholesterol level and may possibly help prevent heart attacks. Pectin also slows glucose metabolism in diabetics. Apples contain potassium which may reduce the chances of a stroke and have a trace of boron believed to build bones and to increase mental vitality. Apples offer a small amount of vitamin A and vitamin C and have only a trace of sodium. An average-size apple contains about 80 calories. Unpeeled apples provide the most nutritional benefits. Eating five daily servings of fruits and vegetables lowers the chances of cancer. A recent study found that eating nine or ten daily servings of fruits and vegetables, combined with three servings of low-fat dairy products, were effective in lowering blood pressure

Applications
Pink Lady™ apples especially love the company fresh strawberries, pineapple, kiwifruit and mango for refreshing fruit salad. Good for eating out of hand and cooking or baking, this grand apple makes mouthwatering tarts, pies, dumplings, cobblers, tortes and sauces. Chefs favor this apple for its outstanding dessert quality and the fact it resists browning when cut. Sliced or cut apples stay white longer if put in a bowl of water with two tablespoons of lemon juice. To store, keep apples in the coldest part of the refrigerator. This apple freezes well. Apples have long been referred to as Nature's toothbrush! While they don't actually clean the teeth, apples promote dental hygiene. Biting and chewing an apple stimulates the gums. The apple's sweetness promotes the flow of saliva which reduces tooth decay by decreasing the levels of bacteria in the mouth.

Geography/History
From the land "down under" and at first known as Cripps Pink, this apple was originally developed by J.E.L. Cripps of the Western Australian Department of Agriculture in the early 1980s. A cross between a Lady Williams and a Golden Delicious, Pink Lady™ is a registered trademark of the Australian Apple and Pear Growers Association, Inc. Released in Australia in 1989 and introduced into the United States by way of New Zealand, Pink Lady™ apples have recently become one of the most sought-after apple varieties. Pink Lady™ is the last apple harvested in Washington State in late October. Cool fall nights are credited for this apple's bright pink color, hence its name.
